me, Beaumont Hannant, Richard Brown, and about five thousand cups of tea.
Brian Long at Caroline, wanted to start an electronic music label called Astralwerks. As I recall, he got no love or support from the old grannies at the parent company label. Naturally, Astralwerks would go on to usher in huge bands like Chemical Brothers and Fat Boy Slim. I think this ep of mine, with Beaumont Hannant and Richard Brown, was the second thing ever out on the label. I went to York, England to record it in the early autumn. The work flowed pretty effortlessly in the studio, with me on guitars and bass and keyboard and B.H. working the beats and samples and R.B engineering. Richard suggested a little accent on Promenade that greatly shaped the song. My memory is of a freezing studio, with constant hot drinks and 'chip bun' sandwiches and a free-flowing method of coming up with songs. At night I'd write the lyric parts for the next day's session. Having listened to Beaumont's elegant, spare, yet emotionally monumental solo tracks, I knew that we could produce something good.
